collaboration assessment somatic therapy structure sessions relationship accountability

How does it work?

“I’ve been to therapy before. How will seeing a trauma informed somatic practitioner be similar or different?”

We begin our working relationship by assessing, together, where you’re at:

  • What’s working, what’s not?

  • What do you long for?

  • How would we know if you got it?

This assessment is an active accountability document for both of us.  I use them to make sure that, over our time working together, we are developing the tools to get you what you want.

We will refer back to your assessment both to check in about how we’re doing and also to better understand how far you’ve come. And this document can and will likely change as you heal and have attainable visions of your life that you could have never imagined before.

From there, our time is spent in a variety of ways.

Often we will start the session with a practice that helps you develop your ability to identify and notice the nuances of your bodily sensations.

We might work some boundary setting skills and delve into how your individual nervous system responds to triggers and how you can use your sensations to recover before you act after that trigger.

You may encounter one of my many ridiculous, occasionally brilliant metaphors.  We might have a larger verbal check-in about a relationship and what you want to practice differently in it and make a plan for sessions to develop that muscle memory.

We might break down how ableism is impacting your self-worth and develop a kinesthetic forgiveness practice.

We might practice identifying the loudest sensations that are accompanying your anxiety and learning how to titrate in and out so we don’t overwhelm your nervous system and you can still learn to feel into the sensations of anxiety in order to move & change them.

My sessions are generally emergent and largely guided by you.

Some more about my training & who I am

Because I think it matters:  I'm a white settler queer with Ukrainian, English and Prussian ancestry who was raised on occupied Duwamish territory (Pacific Northwest).  I identify as a disabled, chronically ill, non-binary, transgender and femme.  I have a mixed class background, am a survivor and am also a new parent with a kiddo under 5.  I was raised in U.C.C. churches as a small child and in the last decade plus I have been practicing anti-zionist Judaism with my raised-Jewish husband and kid.

I don't think that having a particular identity necessarily equals having a political framework about said identity, AND it also matters.

For me, all of my identities, marginalized and privileged, are places of deep ongoing engagement at both an interpersonal and systemic level.  I believe this is the only way to be an ethical and integrity-filled healer and human being.

I have been in study and practice around all things embodiment, trauma, nervous systems and bodies since 2009 with a variety of organizations, schools and individuals including Denise Benson, Embodiment International, Strozzi Institute, Meredith Broome, the Milne Institute, the MacKinnon Body Therapy Center, Generative Somatics, Upledger Institute, and Turtle Tank.
